SMS Subscription Plans vs Pay-As-You-Go Bundles: How to Decide

5 min read

SimpliSend offers two ways to keep an SMS balance funded: a monthly subscription plan that includes a set number of credits each billing cycle, or a one-time bundle purchase that adds a fixed number of credits whenever you buy it. They can also be combined - a subscription for your baseline volume, topped up with a bundle in a busy month.

How a subscription works

A subscription plan bills monthly or annually and includes a set number of SMS credits each cycle, plus, on higher tiers, platform features like additional team seats or API access. It renews automatically until cancelled, and a cancellation takes effect at the end of the current billing period rather than immediately cutting off access you've already paid for.

How a bundle purchase works

A bundle is a one-time purchase: pick a size, pay once, and that many credits are added to your balance immediately. There's no recurring commitment - buying a bundle today has no effect on whether you buy another one next week, next month, or never again. In SimpliSend, "topping up" your balance and "buying a bundle" are the same action; there's no separate freeform top-up amount, only the fixed bundle sizes on the pricing page.

Which one fits your sending pattern

  • Steady, predictable monthly volume → a subscription plan is usually the better value
  • Occasional or seasonal campaigns → pay-as-you-go bundles avoid paying for a tier you won't use every month
  • Need team seats, roles, or API access beyond the free tier → those come bundled into subscription plans, not standalone bundles
  • Not sure yet → start with the free plan or a small bundle, and switch once you have a few months of real usage data

They're not mutually exclusive

A subscription's included SMS resets each billing cycle rather than rolling over indefinitely, so a business with a steady baseline and the occasional high-volume month often does best on a mid-tier subscription with an extra bundle bought only in the months that need it, rather than sizing a subscription for the busiest possible month year-round.
