SMS Marketing for E-Commerce: Abandoned Cart and Order Updates
Online stores have more behavioural data than almost any other business type - who visited, what they added to a cart, what they've bought before - and SMS is a natural channel for acting on that data quickly, because it reaches the customer while the moment is still fresh.
Abandoned cart recovery
A cart abandoned an hour ago is a warmer lead than almost any cold prospect a store could target with a new ad. A short text - "You left something in your cart - complete your order here: [link]" - sent within a couple of hours, while the intent is still fresh, recovers a meaningful share of otherwise-lost sales. Waiting a day or more to send it loses most of that effect.
Order and shipping updates
These are transactional messages, not marketing (see our transactional vs marketing guide), and customers expect them regardless of whether they opted into promotions - "Your order has shipped, tracking: [link]" reduces support queries by answering the "where's my order" question before it's asked. Keep promotional content out of these messages entirely; mixing a discount code into a shipping notice blurs a transactional message into marketing and drags the consent question in with it.
Flash promotions and restocks
Time-limited discount codes and back-in-stock alerts work the same way for online stores as for physical retail - the urgency of the offer is what makes SMS the better channel than email, since the whole point is that the customer needs to act before a deadline that email might not be seen in time for.
Setting realistic expectations
- Not every abandoned cart will convert - treat the recovery rate as a bonus, not a guarantee
- Keep transactional and promotional messages on separate templates and separate opt-ins
- Respect frequency - an online store sending daily promotions burns out its list fast
- Track link clicks per campaign so you know which messages are actually driving sales
An e-commerce business connecting an external database - an order management system or a headless commerce backend - can automate a lot of this by syncing customer and order data into the contact list on a schedule, rather than exporting and re-importing a spreadsheet by hand each time.

Non-profits often run on tight budgets and volunteer time - SMS is one of the few channels that's both cheap per message and genuinely effective.

A gym class with three no-shows is three people who could have come off a waiting list. SMS reminders close that gap cheaply.
